Frequently Asked Questions
- Why Choose Moby?
There are many reasons why this program chose Moby. The first is because of the many features he offers, as listed above in the specs. Moby comes with all the components needed to set up and start collecting and reusing rainwater. Secondly, Moby was designed for ease of use so he can be elevated or sit right on the ground. Two ports give you the option of a spigot at the top or bottom port. Lastly, Moby is manufactured right here in the USA and made of 100% recycled material. Together these features help this program support a sustainable product that will help to conserve our water supply and protect our local water quality.

Where is the best place to put my rain barrel?
Choose a downspout on your house or garage that is closest to the plants you water the most. Moby is a gravity-fed system so choose a downspout where his overflow will soak into your lawn or garden, and not your neighbors’.
-
Do I need to put Moby on blocks?
Elevating Moby isn’t required for it to function, but it can help with his water pressure. You can also place Moby on a pervious surface (e.g. landscaped) that allows his overflow to soak into the ground.
-
What do I need to know about maintaining my rain barrel?
Moby requires very little maintenance and upkeep. Secure his lid and keep the screen clear of debris at all times. Since stagnant water sitting in Moby may develop an organic smell, you may want to periodically drain him and clean inside of him with a brush and fresh water. In the winter, just open his lower spigot to drain out the water so he does not freeze.
-
Why are the original Moby rain barrels black?
Recycled plastic comes to us in the form of small colorful plastic pellets. We add a shot of black pigment, along with UV inhibitors, to even out the color and that keeps Moby a nice consistent black.

How do I install my rain barrel?
Your Moby comes with one spigot and one plug. You can choose to assemble him with the spigot in the bottom port and plug in the top. If you choose the bottom port for your spigot, it will need to be elevated. Your Moby will weigh 520 pounds when full so please make sure you install him on a level foundation or sturdy blocks! The spigot allows you to either fill up a watering can or attach a hose to extend where you need the water. Remember being gravity feed, Moby will not have city pressure coming out of his spigot, but he will have enough pressure when full to extend a hose 25 feet with no incline.
Follow the instructions that come with Moby. After he is assembled and ready for installation, you may want to place him on concrete or decorative blocks. Measure the combined height of the barrel and blocks to help you determine the height to cut your gutter. Remove the bottom gutter elbow and set aside. Cut your gutter with a hacksaw and attach the elbow downspout to the gutter. Be sure to give yourself approximately two to four inches between the downspout and lid of Moby so that you can easily lift his lid and clean him out when necessary.
At this point, attach the overflow hose on the side of Moby that works best for your situation and that allows his overflow to soak into the ground or better yet into a rain garden that will allow for further runoff infiltration.
Moby may also be for you if you do not have gutters and areas of your roof are shooting out streams of rainwater that are creating eroded areas. His wide lid will allow you to collect that water and prevent some of the erosion as well as avoid “splash back” on your house.Assembly Options:
You have two ports on Moby so for additional functionality, you may want to consider purchasing an additional standard 3/4” spigot. By adding a second spigot you have two options for accessing your water, one for a hose and one for a watering can. If you decide to add a second spigot, we recommend you purchase a “kink-free” one.

How do we winterize our Moby?
Drain Moby before temperatures drop below freezing. Connect a hose to the lower spigot to direct water into a planting bed, making sure it is flowing away from your home. Keep the spigot open so that water does not accumulate in Moby and freeze. He will most likely survive a freeze but he is not designed to go through multiple freeze-thaw cycles. -
What about mosquitoes?
Moby is equipped with a mosquito-proof screen on the lid to keep mosquitoes and other insects out. Make sure the supplied components are installed in their proper positions and you will not have to worry about mosquitoes.
-
Can I hook a pump up to my rain barrel?
Yes. Home improvement stores sell transfer pumps that require an electrical outlet. They work great and can move eight plus gallons of water per minute. Moby holds 65 gallons of water giving you about eight minutes of watering. This is really helpful when we get good rains and you want to make room for the next rain fall. We do not recommend that you leave the pump going when Moby is empty
-
What if I do not use all my rainwater?
If you are having trouble using your rainwater, you can attach a hose to Moby’s spigot, extend it to your planting bed then attach a soaker hose that will allow for drip irrigation. We recommend you manually open up the holes on the soaker hose with a knife or scissors after you decide where you want the water to drip out. Then through trial-and-error, you can determine how much to leave your spigot open to give enough pressure to drip into your plants. With this design, Moby is filling and dripping, filling and dripping and your plants are thriving!
-
Can I buy replacement parts from you?
Most everything that comes with Moby can be replaced at any home improvement store except the overflow cap. We are happy to sell replacement screens, but you can also use the screen that you currently have as a template and cut a new one from extra screening you may already have.
